§EU Cosmetics Directive approved preservatives considered to be the ‘natural alternatives’ for use in more natural-based personal care products

Aqua (water):
in Latin, is the word used in the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) to label this vital element. Water is primarily used in practically all cosmetics and personal care products to dissolve many of the ingredients that impart skin benefits known as actives. It also forms emulsions where the oil and water components of the formula are combined to produce creams and lotions. These are referred to as oil-in-water emulsions, or as water-in-oil depending on the ratios of the oil and water phases.

Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter:
an effective emollient and smoother; has natural antioxidant properties as well as a small quantity of allantoin which is renowned for its healing qualities. It is also said to protect the skin against external aggressions and sunrays.

Cetyl alcohol:
is a long chain organic fatty alcohol derived from GMO-free vegetable fatty acids. An emulsifying agent for creams and lotions; has emollient properties aiding skin softness. Permitted in organic cosmetics by organic certification agencies.

Nigella sativa (black cumin) oil:
the Nigella sativa plant is native to southwest Asia, Africa and theMediterranean. Its oil is chock-full of vitamins (A, B, C) and minerals like magnesium and zinc. It balances sebum production and cleanses clogged pores. Black cumin´s essential fatty acids help support the barrier function of the skin and prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL). It is also known for its antimicrobial anddisinfectant properties. Thanks to its antioxidant content, it can diminish fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots.Black cumin oil is claimed to decrease the severity of inflammatory conditions such as eczema.

or glycerol, is released when an oil is hydrolysed, such as during soapmaking. A common cosmetic and food ingredient used as a natural humectant and moisturiser. Glycerin is one of the oldest and most respected skin moisturisers. It has been proven in many trials (both clinical and instrumental) to increase the moisture content of the skin and protect it from becoming dry and scaly. Glycerin is listed in all of the major pharmacopoeias and is used extensively for the treatment of the skin. Our glycerin is produced from GMOfree karanja nut oil.

Glyceryl stearate:
it is made from GMO-free vegetable sources. Produced by the esterification of glycerin and stearic acid. Functions as an emulsifier in creams and lotions with emollient (skin softening) properties. Permitted in food and by organic certification agencies in cosmetic products.

Diatomaceous earth:
it is a naturally-formed sedimentary mineral rock made from the fossilized remains of diatoms, which are oceanic unicellular algae. The skeletons of diatoms consist of about 80%-90% silica, 2%- 4% alumina and 0.5%-2% iron dioxide. Silica is considered a beauty mineral that builds & maintains healthy connective tissue, skin, hair and nails. Topically speaking, diatomaceous earth acts as an exfoliant that effectively removes dead skin cells from the skin surface. It also purifies the complexion and mops up heavy

metals. When used as a mask, it can tighten and firm the skin.

Camelina sativa (camelina) seed oil:
packed with omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin E; has similar properties to flax seed oil but it is much more stable. Camelina oil nourishes, improves skin elasticity, repairs damaged tissue, has inflammatory properties (thus making it beneficial for psoriasis, eczema, etc.) and provides a protective coating for hair follicles.

Coco glucoside:
a detergent from the chemical group alkyl polyglucosides produced from GMO-free coconuts. We have chosen this cleansing agent because it comes from a sustainable plant source and not derived from petrochemicals. We use it at very low concentrations to produce a mild and cleansing action.Approved for use in organic cosmetics by organic certification agencies.

Lactobacillus punica granatum (pomegranate) fruit fermented extract:
an ancient fruit found in Western Asia, China and Japan packed with ellagic acid, anthocyanins (antioxidants) and the rare omega 5 essential fatty acid. By underging bacterial fermentation, we managed to potentiate its beneficial effects including: a boost in restoration and repair of skin, a more even-out skin tone, inhibition of free radicals, protection against UV radiation and increased collagen synthesis, improved appearance of wrinkles and greater elasticity.

Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) root extract:
this is one of Nature´s wonder botanicals thanks to its content of glycyrrhizin, glabridin and liquiritin. Licorice provides anti-inflammatory benefits that mimic cortisol, balance sebum production and inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that triggers melanin production, thus constitutes a safe and more effective alternative to hydroquinone.

Leuconostoc/radish root ferment filtrate:
is an antimicrobial peptide isolated from radish roots thathave been subjected to bacterial fermentation. This broad spectrum ECOCERT- approved preservative is considered a safe and effective alternative to parabens and other harsh antimicrobials.

Angelica keskei (ashitaba) leaf/stem extract (tomorrow´s leaf):
has been used for centuries to enhance thebody’s natural health due to its remarkable benefits. The Japanese named this plant tomorrow´s leaf after they observed that when the stem was cut, a new leaf magically appeared a mere day later. Tomorrow´s Leaf is a dietary treasure, containing eleven vitamins, thirteen minerals, chlorophyll, enzymes, carotene, germanium, saponins, proteins, plant fibers, glycosides, coumarins, and a unique and rare class of flavonoids called chalcones. These are very unique polyphenols found in the leaf; they are bountiful in the bright-yellow

sap of the plant. When used on the skin, it makes available the antioxidant Chalcone (Xanthoangelol and 4-hydroxyderricin), which is much more potent than those found in green tea, citrus fruits and grapes. Thisantioxidant will not only ward off and neutralize deleterious free radicals, but it will also allow your skin to regenerate in record time.

Calcium gluconate:
like gluconolactone, is a preservative derived from gluconic acid (its calcium salt) and is approved by all natural/organic cosmetic certification bodies. Calcium gluconate can act too as an antiinflammatory, healing, humectant and skin-conditioning agent.

is a naturally-derived, usually produced by microorganism oxidation of glucose, veganfriendly (non-GMO) preservative with broad spectrum protection that improves skin´s moisture content and has an exceptional low toxicity profile, long history of use, is non-sensitizing and non-irritating. This polyhydroxy acid also provides antioxidant, anti-aging, antibacterial, chelating, deodorizing, skinconditioning and sun-protective benefits.

Coconut alcohol:
produced from fermentation of non-GMO coconuts. An effective extracting medium and solvent for herbal extracts taking out both water and oil soluble nutrients; can also be used as a natural preservative. We add minute amounts so as to avoid disturbing the pH of the skin and/or cause irritation.

commonly known as vitamin E; we use a mix of tocopherols made from GMO-free sunfloweroil. Provides antioxidant protection to oils thereby keeping a product fresh. Vitamin E is one of the oil soluble vitamins that has been used therapeutically for the treatment of numerous conditions such as sunburn, acne and itchy skin conditions.

It is a potent free radicalscavenger (antioxidant) and an excellent skin protectant.

Synthetic fluorphlogopite:
also known as synthetic fluorine mica. This white to grey mineral is produced at very high temperatures and consists of layered magnesium aluminum silicate sheets weakly bound together by potassium ions. Thanks to its high molecular weight particles, it makes the perfect bulking and viscosity increasing agent (aqueous.

Phytic acid:
a chelating ingredient (binds to heavy metals) found in nature e.g. rice (Oryza sativa). This is a material that ‘mops up’ any trace amounts of colored metal ions that may otherwise discolor or spoil theproduct. It also works alongside our proprietary preservative system to extend the shelf life of the formula and helps to weaken any contamination or spoilage organism that might be introduced into the product. Phytic acid also offers moisturizing, sebum-controlling and skin lightening benefits.

Iron oxides (CI77499):
also known as black iron oxide. Iron oxides are safe inorganic compounds made of iron and oxygen. They are widely used as colorants in cosmetic formulas.

Sodium hydroxide:
produced by electrolysis of salt and water. Acts as a pH buffering agent in cosmeticproducts; it is added to maintain the correct acid/alkali level of a product. It comes in very low concentrations.

Sodium benzoate:
is the sodium salt of benzoic acid; a preservative approved for use worldwide and is included on the European Union Cosmetics Directive “Positive List” (Europe has banned more than 1,300 ingredients due to safety concerns). It has also been approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare in both rinse-off and leave-in applications. Japan, like Europe, abide by the most stringent criteria in the world concerning what ingredients can be used in personal care products to also keep the productitself free from harmful contamination. Europe´s conform level with the safety data associated with this permitted preservative is clearly reassuring.
